U.S. Burden
Nov 4, 2013

The U.S. Burden is the total financial obligation of the U.S. Government and is the sum of our national debt and the present value of our unfunded financial liabilities.   Our debt is money we have spent that we do not have and our unfunded liability is money that we do not have but we are currently committed to spend.  The U.S. Burden is actually the measure of our "Real" National Debt.   If the federal government were to properly fund our Social Security, Medicare, and other entitlements we should be collecting taxes each year to finance trust funds sufficiently to be able to make these entitlement payouts when they come due.   However, the cost of funding these trust funds appropriately is so prohibitive that this element of our budget has been essentially ignored since 1968.  Cox and Archer, in their WSJ article, explain why this funding of our entitlement liability is prohibitive.  This failure to fund our accruing entitlements annually is the major element of the USA Ponzi scheme.

U.S. Federal Obligations

The U.S. Federal Obligations represent the total financial liability of the U.S. Government and is the sum of our national debt and the present value of our unfunded financial liabilities created by our entitlement programs.   This is essentially the same as the Comeback America Initiative's measure of our National Burden but provided by Shadowstats.com.
